BCHN Asthma Program Expands to Williamsbridge Family Practice
After a successful pilot at Comprehensive Health Care Center, BCHN is expanding its Breathe Free Bronx asthma program to Williamsbridge Family Practice.

Breathe Free Bronx is a home-based asthma program for patients to help improve asthma symptoms and reduce hospitalizations and visits to the emergency room due to asthma complications. This community health worker-led initiative focuses on meeting patients where they are, at the health center, and at home to educate the family on asthma self-management.

"By expanding Breathe Free Bronx asthma to Williamsbridge, BCHN provided our practice with a wonderful opportunity to improve the care of our patients with asthma," enthuses Dr. Fabienne M L. Daguilh (pictured right).

"Our patients will not only benefit from a targeted education in the office but will also receive additional teaching at their home.  These services will truly address the contributing environmental factors that make asthma one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the Bronx. This multidisciplinary approach to asthma is a big step in addressing health disparities in our underserved population."

CFCC Educates Patients During Diabetes Day Event
Millions of people around the world live with diabetes or know someone living with diabetes. While diabetes is not yet a curable disease, it is a very treatable one, and no matter how frightening, annoying, and frustrating it can be, people with diabetes can live long, healthy, and happy lives. Comprehensive Family Care Center (CFCC) recently put a spotlight on the disease with a Diabetes Day event, spearheaded by Montefiore's Joanie Bennett, CCNM, pictured above with John Ruiz, BCHN Board of Directors Treasurer.

"We wanted to highlight the many diabetes services available at CFCC," Bennett explained.

Patients were educated on the types of diabetes, managing diets (with portion plate giveaways!), understanding blood sugar levels, the importance of exercise, eye health, and much more.

Stay Safe from the Dangers of Sizzling Summer Heat

With a stifling heat wave hitting the Bronx, now is the perfect time to highlight ways to stay cool during the long, hot summer.  Check out tips below from BCHN health educator Jaunia Coombs:

• Drink water to keep your body hydrated (drinking alcohol or caffeine can leave you dehydrated in the summer heat).

• Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.

• Avoid doing too much physical activity during the sun’s peak hours (11:00 AM – 4:00 PM).

• Take a break in an air-conditioned location (like a library, mall, or community center) during the sun’s peak hours.

• Cover exposed skin with sunscreen that has an SPF of 15 or higher.

Also, be sure to check on your family, friends, and neighbors who are older or have chronic health conditions.
