Industry Innovator Responds to EPA Coal Ash Regulations

As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of geosynthetics, agricultural and industrial textiles, HUESKER, Inc. is keeping their finger on the pulse of the EPA regulations regarding coal combustion residuals (CCR). The “EPA has undertaken a concerted effort to identify and to assess the structural integrity of impoundments, ponds, and other management units, within the electric power generating industry, managing wet-handled coal combustion residuals¹.” Sven Schröer, HUESKER CEO says, “The EPA’s regulations and their impact on the electric power generating industry will greatly affect how CCR is handled in the coming years. Many of the electric power generating companies are HUESKER customers and we must be prepared to assist our colleagues help minimalize the effect these regulations will have on their industry and the users of their electric power. In 2014, 39% of energy generation occurred using coal; making coal the single largest resource for electric power generation ahead of natural gas, nuclear, hydropower and other renewables. It’s essential that HUESKER stand ready to help the electric power generating industry be compliant with the EPA and individual state rulings.”

Research indicates the EPA insists “all CCR surface impoundments be designed, constructed, operated, and maintained with adequate slope protection.²” While the ruling provides broad statements including “other slope protection…would also be considered adequate²”, HUESKER knows the electric power generating industry doesn’t seek “adequate” in any venture they undertake thus, will turn to HUESKER for more long term sustainable solutions for a wide range of geosynthetic applications including but not limited to slope protection, impoundment closure, soil reinforcement and dewatering.

As one of the leading geosynthetics and textile manufacturers, HUESKER clearly understands the best practices in various geosynthetic/textile applications (surface erosion, capping, lining, slope reinforcement, base reinforcement, etc.) and has responded to the EPA rulings by offering a comprehensive set of solutions including services and products to their friends in the Electric power generating industry. Those solutions include the following:

  • Capping needs
  • Control of contaminants
  • Dewatering of excavated materials
  • Stabilization of very soft slurry for access roads

Todd Julian, VP Sales and Marketing for HUESKER states “we understand the electric power generating companies will respond differently to the recent rulings of the EPA and each of those companies will have varying needs based on current conditions however, we wanted to be prepared to help the industry address their varying needs by building a complete multi-faceted set of solutions for them to consider.

HUESKER has prepared one of the most extensive set of solutions, through their broad product portfolio, to meet the needs of the electric power generating industry. These solutions include the following product line and of course, the German engineering expertise to accompany the application of such.

HUESKER is offering details as to their various solutions via a free online webinar for owners, engineers and others in the electric power generating business on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 2:00pm EST. Visit coalash.eventbrite.com for more information or to reserve a spot.
